Local reaction is mixed on the Tuesday defeat of Proposition 23, the measure that would have suspended implementation of California's 2006 air pollution law, AB 32.
Some in the business community, especially within the construction industry, had been wary of the potential effects of AB 32 on their businesses.
But statewide, preservation of the emissions control law and its immediate implementation won the argument.
Tallies from the secretary of state show that 61.3 percent of voters denied the measure passage with 97.1 percent of precincts reported.
It was rejected by a smaller margin locally, with 55.77 percent of San Diego County voters against Prop 23. Opponents contended that it would kill the sustainability movement in California and slow down growth in the green job sector.
Proponents held the belief that the continuation of AB 32 would increase operating costs to businesses and increase energy costs for consumers.
